Delicious Fasting Food Recipe for Devotees on Navratri

Chaitra Navratri, nine-day Hindu festival is celebrated in honor of Goddess Durga.  Navratri observed in the lunar month of Chaitra, Goddess Shakti is worshipped in nine forms on nine days schedule, according to the Hindu calendar that falls either in the month of March or April as per English calendar.  Devotees worship the different avatars of Goddess Durga for nine days. The word Navratri means ‘Nine Night’ during which goddess Durga is worshipped and many people observe fasts.  Navratri is celebrated twice a year with great gusto and enthusiasm, one falls on the beginning of spring and onset of autumn.  During these nine days devotees give up on non-vegetarian foods and some also eliminate onions and garlic from their meal.

People, who observe fasts on Navratri, can only consume one-time meal which must be prepared by using “Sendha Namak” (Rock Salt).  Rock salt is rich in minerals and does not pose any health problems.  This actually helps you to maintain the energy level of your body which gets decreased during fasting.  So, here you will get a delicious recipe of fasting food that is not only delicious but very easy to make.

Sabudana Ki Khichadi 

Sabudana (Sago) is full of starch and carbohydrates that give you a much-needed energy boost during fasting.  For making Sabudana Ki Khichadi you will be needed this:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Sabudana
  • Oil
  • Rock salt
  • Sugar
  • Two medium boiled potatoes
  • Curry leaves
  • Peanuts
  • Grated ginger
  • Cumin seeds
  • Lemon juice
  • Green Chili

Method:

  1. Soak the Sabudana in water for overnight or 3-5 hours.
  2. Drain the Sabudana very well and then spread over a thick cloth, this is because the water will make the Sabudana stick together in lumps. So, it is important to drain out the water very well to avoid lumps.
  3. Chop the boiled potatoes.
  4. Roast the peanuts till browned and then make grind it try to make peanut powder.
  5. Mix powdered peanuts, salt, and sugar with grained Sabudana for marinating.
  6. Now heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, curry leaf, green chili and fry them till browned then add grated ginger and fry.
  7. Add chopped potatoes into the mixture and fry then add the Sabudana.
  8. When the Sabudana will lose it opaqueness and look translucent it means it is cooked.
  9. Do not fry much as it will get lumpy or hard.
  10. Take it off from fire and add lemon juice and mix well.

Serve the hot Sabudana Khichadi in a ceramic plate and enjoy.  You can even serve this to your guest on the auspicious occasion of Navratri.
