Raksha Bandhan is a famous sibling’s festival that is being observed in India. The festival is dedicated to siblings love. Like US celebrates sibling’s day, Spain observes Hermonus day, in the same manner India celebrates Raksha Bandhan. The term is made by joining two Hindi words ‘Raksha’ which means protection and ‘Bandhan’ that means shield, so collectively meaning of the word is protective shield. In this festival sister’s tie Rakhi thread in the arms of the brother and in return of that brother make a promise to protect her. This is why this festival is called so.
The festival is known with several names in India some of the famous names are Rakhi Purnima, Nariyal Purnima, Upakarmam, and Kajari Purnima. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana (July to August). Sweets, gifts and Rakhi are everywhere to celebrate the festivals. This festival is equally important for brothers and sisters. Where sisters are exited for the presents and brothers eagerly wait for the sweets and Rakhi.
Sisters pray to god for the long life of her brother. She takes a day long fasting till she ties the silk and golden thread on her brother’s wrist. There are different designs and patterns in Rakhi. For example small kids prefer Rakhi with their favorite cartoon design, and matured brothers love to tie simple Rakhi with golden strip, or lord Ganesh or rudraksha. Whatever be the size, whatever be the design but the ethics and the significance of the golden thread remains the same for siblings.
